The Hummock Lookout

Affectionately known as Bundaberg’s only hill, “The Hummock” is a low-lying remnant of a volcano 96 meters above sea-level. It is about 10km east of Bundaberg and accessible from Bargara Road or FE Walker St. In 1799 Lieutenant Matthew Flinders sailed past the coast and named this hill “The Sloping Hummock”. Today it is more commonly called “The Hummock.” The largest remnant of Woongarra Scrub, a dry rainforest plant community is located here in the Hummock Reserve. The nearby Maureen Schmitt Park contains regenerating rainforest. The main lookout on Turners Way offers visitors outstanding panoramic views of the ocean, city and the patchwork of sugar cane fields. There are two shelters with tables, water fountains and bins. Further along on Bowden Street is Heathwood Park and the Hummock Reserve. There is a playground, open grassy areas and a half basketball court in Heathwood Park and toilets, barbeques and picnic facilities in the adjacent reserve. A well maintained timber boardwalk takes you through the Woongarra Scrub remnant. At the end of the boardwalk, a lookout on top of a water reservoir offers views of the surrounding district.
