Safe Spaces, Thriving Places
CBDs are important to regional cities and the Bundaberg Region is no different - it’s the heart of our community.
By making our CBD a thriving place we can:
- Shop local - support our regional economy
- Find connection - meet friends and family or join a group or club
- Access services – like the Council office, courthouse, post office or banks
- Celebrate our cultural and social identity – visit the gallery or theatre, enjoy our heritage buildings, take part in events and gatherings
In recognition of the importance of this space to our community Council is launching a project aimed at celebrating and enhancing our city centre to facilitate a social, economic and infrastructure uplift of the Bundaberg CBD.
A survey focussed on the impacts of antisocial behaviour is available for the community and CBD traders and staff to share their feedback and ideas.
Complete the survey below.
Project supporters
Creating change in our CBD is a high priority but it’s not something Council can achieve alone.
That’s why we’re working alongside many other organisations which are leading activities and services that will contribute to improving the area.
Supporting organisations actively working to create Safe Spaces Thriving Places in the Bundaberg CBD include:
- Queensland Police Service
- Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce
- Regional Business HQ
- Salvation Army
- Regional Housing Limited
Council’s priority actions list for Safe Spaces, Thriving Places
- outwardly reflecting our vibrant community by engaging and collaborating with CBD traders to explore opportunities for CBD activation
- increased cleaning of CBD pathways and areas
- focussed and targeted community development support to facilitate the coordination and collaboration of local support services. This will improve the homelessness response and outcomes for those in need of support
- advocating to relevant government representatives and departments about the need for accountability and transparency and increased support as relevant
- increased Compliance Services staff presence in the CBD to ensure regular and consistent enforcement of Council’s local laws and policies
- reviewing design options for CBD infrastructure to ensure we balance modernising our city centre and improving accessibility with undertaking works that are within our community’s financial means.

Why are CBDs so important to our economy?
CBDs play a crucial role in regional economies by generating significant economic activity. As a Small Business Friendly Council we are committed to better understanding the operating environment for local businesses, including exploring key challenges and opportunities and identifying stakeholders.
CBDs are crucial to the economy in regional Queensland for several reasons:
- Economic hub: CBDs serve as the central point for economic activity, attracting businesses and services that are essential to the local community.
- Employment generation: They provide employment opportunities, contributing to the overall economic growth and job creation in the region.
- Service delivery: CBDs offer a range of services, including retail, healthcare, education and government services, which are vital to the community.
- Investment attraction: The presence of CBDs attracts investment, which can lead to infrastructure improvements and economic diversification.
- Regional integration: CBDs facilitate regional integration by providing a common platform for communication and collaboration among businesses and services.
- CBDs play a multifaceted role in regional Queensland's economy, contributing to the overall growth and development of the region.
What area does this project encompass?
Safe Spaces, Thriving Places is focussed on the Bundaberg CBD. For this project we consider the CBD boundary to be bounded by the river to Woondooma Street and Kennedy Bridge to the train line, in line with the Safe Night Precinct project (see the map on the Queensland Government website).
