Local companies share in $4.5m Rubyanna contracts

16 Mar 2017

Two local companies are the beneficiaries of work worth a combined $4.5 million with Rubyanna Wastewater Treatment Plant contractors Downer Utilities recently awarding the contracts.

Christensen Industries and Bundaberg Machinery and Engineering have been granted the contracts which form part of the $71 million Rubyanna project.

Water and Wastewater portfolio spokesman Cr Jason Bartels said the news provided an economic shot in the arm for the two businesses which are key employers in the region.

“Christensen Industries will undertake a $1.5 million building contract which includes construction of laboratories and various ancillary buildings.

“Bundaberg Machinery and Engineering has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $3 million for major steel fabrication work including the construction and installation of major pipe components at the plant.”

Divisional representative Cr Scott Rowleson said while it was great news for the companies involved it was also a very positive announcement for the region in relation to job security and producing an economic outcome that would create a strong ripple effect across the whole community.

“Congratulations must also go to Downer Utilities for its commitment to supporting local business, contractors and sub-contractors where possible.

“The contract to design, construct, maintain and operate the Rubyanna Wastewater Treatment Plant commenced in November 2015 and has an expected completion date early next year.

“While the contracts awarded this week may seem small in comparison to the overall $71 million cost of Rubyanna, the economic benefits that will flow to the Bundaberg Region from this state-of-the-art facility will be massive,” said Cr Rowleson.

“This benefit will be achieved through the provision of essential sewerage infrastructure to new developments and the decommissioning of the aged and environmentally challenged East Bundaberg Wastewater Treatment Plant.”
