Mayor supports push for Government decentralisation

17 Feb 2017

Mayor Jack Dempsey has enthusiastically supported proposals by the Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt to promote the relocation or establishment of government offices in regional cities like Bundaberg.

“There is no doubt that a decentralised approach to the location of government services, be they State or Federal, represent an expression of confidence in regional cities and their futures.

“Bundaberg is a prime example of a city on the move with investor and business confidence at remarkably high levels.

“”It simply makes sense for governments to support that growth and what more visible or tangible means is there than through the relocation or establishment of government services or agencies within regional cities,” said Cr Dempsey.

“There are so many flow-on benefits that could be applied to the Bundaberg Region if we had a meaningful presence of a Federal or State Government department right here in our city.

“These benefits extend to jobs and property sales and growth of Council rates base as well as the confidence it would supply to potential developers or investors.

“Council has made an investment in prime locations where suitable office space can be established or alternatively there is well positioned commercial space still available in the CBD.

“Obviously with our strong agricultural base and our developing port location the opportunities around the trade/export sectors as well as the investment locally in produce would appear to be natural areas where the Bundaberg Region could justify the establishment of appropriate government support services.”

Cr Dempsey said given the rapidly developing nature of the region it would seem prudent for State or Federal Governments to seriously examine what role the Bundaberg Region can play in the future development of State and Federal assets through the integration of services into the region.

“I will be asking our Council to provide support for this initiative expressed by the Member for Hinkler and to develop a proposal that articulates the benefits for this type of investment in the future of regional centres like Bundaberg.”
